In Their Own Words

NY

Nur Yasmin bt Azri

Ipoh · Reading Circle Member

"I have been part of the Reading Circle for about seven months now. What keeps me coming back is that no one here tries to sell you anything or make you feel like you are behind. We just read and talk. The facilitator always asks questions that make you think rather than just summarising what we read."

Ipoh · Deep-Read Programme Graduate

"The Deep-Read programme was more demanding than I expected — in a good way. The texts were not always easy, but having the discussion sessions helped a lot. I finished the programme with a much more nuanced sense of how I want to think about spending and saving, which I did not have before."

Ipoh · Resource Library Member

"The library membership suited me because my schedule is unpredictable. I read through the summaries during lunch breaks or on weekends. The worksheets are surprisingly useful for processing what you have read — they are not just fill-in forms, they actually push you to think."

Ipoh · Reading Circle Member

"I joined mostly out of curiosity and stayed because of the group. There is a mix of people — some younger, some retired — and everyone brings a different perspective. The facilitator handles the different viewpoints really well. I learn as much from the discussion as from the reading."

Ipoh · Deep-Read Programme Graduate

"I appreciated that Cowrie never told us what to do with our money. The whole point was to understand how to think about it, which is different. The certificate at the end was a nice acknowledgement too — something tangible from months of effort."

Ipoh · Library Member & Reading Circle

"I have both the library membership and the Reading Circle subscription. Having both means I can go deeper on the books we discuss each month using the library materials. The Reading Circle alone is worth it, but the combination makes a noticeable difference in how much I take away."

How Members Have Grown

The Challenge

A mid-career professional from Ipoh had been meaning to read more about personal finance for years but found most books either too simplistic or too overwhelming. They wanted structure but kept abandoning self-directed reading after a week or two.

The Approach

They joined the Deep-Read Literacy Programme, which provided a fixed curriculum and twice-monthly sessions. The accountability of a scheduled group discussion and the structure of prepared notes helped them stay with the reading over several months.

What Changed

By the end of the programme, they had completed a full reading curriculum, received a certificate of attendance, and — more importantly — described feeling genuinely more comfortable talking and thinking about money than they had in years.

"I have tried reading about this alone three times before. This was the first time I actually finished something and felt like I understood it."

— Deep-Read Programme participant, Ipoh

The Challenge

A young teacher wanted to understand money topics better but had little time for lengthy programmes and felt intimidated by finance-heavy language. She was also wary of anything that felt like it was pushing her toward specific financial products.

The Approach

She joined the monthly Reading Circle. One session a month fit around her schedule, and the books Cowrie selected were accessible rather than technical. The no-product-sales approach aligned with what she was looking for.

What Changed

After four months in the circle, she described feeling less anxious about money conversations and more confident in how she evaluated financial information she encountered online and in the news.

"The reading circle is the only money-related thing I have done that did not make me feel stupid or sold to."

— Reading Circle member, Ipoh
